Sustainability

The energy problem makes us focus on new methods of sustainable energy. Not only at home but also recreative use as in marine sports. Knowledge from the Ecolution project will be available for everybody.

Seen from out of space Wubbo Ockels realized 25 years ago that the Earth is a vulnerable planet. The Earth and more specific her atmosphere protects mankind against influences from outside. It is only thanks to the atmosphere, that men can live on this planet.

Ockels: “The earth and her indispensable atmosphere are currently not well protected and that has to change. Nobody who sails at sea will even think of destroy the hull of the ship. Everybody takes good care because the boat protects you from the danger of the sea. People on the earth should take the same care of the skin of the planet for it’s the only protection against dangers out of space”.
With such vision Wubbo Ockels’ own ship had to be as sustainable as possible.

The combination of environment-friendly and comfort is most important in the development of the boat. Apart from the goal to make a wonderful sailing trip around the world end to live permanently on board, de Ecolution may be seen as a kind of laboratory for innovative solutions. the yacht will be used to show people that sustainability does not mean less comfort, on the contrary.

The Ecolution has power users like a washing machine, a drier, a dishwasher, a macrowave and a hammam. Using much power is no problem, as long as it is sustainable produced. “Not less, but different”, said Wubbo Ockels.


PHILISOPHY

Ecolution is a sailing yacht, which will sail year round and world wide, summer and winter, throughout the world. Ecolution was built to feel warm and comfortable, like a home, so staying on Ecolution for extended periods is possible.

The goal of the design of Ecolution was to be autonomous, safe and comfortable and easy to handle. She is efficient with energy and resources, without sacrificing quality and comfort. The benefits of this are not only economic, but more importantly, she is less dependent on harbours for fuel and water.

Ecolution stimulates the thought that we need to change our perspective of conventional use of energy in generations to come. It’s an educational example and demonstration of interest and acceptance of sustainable development on Earth.

Innovative technology



The most innovative part of the Ecolution project is that is made technology fully suitable for use on a ship.

Ecolution develops substantial power during sailing particularly close to hull speed (10 knots, equivalent of 125kW) of which a part can be tapped without imposing significant reduction of sailing qualities. Part of this power is used to drive two large and highly efficient carbon propellers that generate electrical energy, which is stored in a large battery bank.

Energy & Safety

Ecolution develops substantial power during sailing particularly close to hull speed (10 knots, equivalent of 125kW) of which a part can be tapped without imposing significant reduction of sailing qualities. Part of this power is used to drive two large and highly efficient carbon propellers that generate electrical energy, which is stored in a large battery bank.

The electric motor can be used in generator mode, where computer controlled electrical load will allow for optimum electric power generation during sailing. The propeller blades are flexible and adapt their camber (curvature) according the function, i.e. generate, propulsion or free run.

Two (bio) diesel engines provide the comforting backup and will be necessary for the extra heating when being in the arctic. The diesel engines are each 55kW.
The total energy-system of the ship is optimized according user requirements in which heat pump, hot water, heating heat exchangers etc. assure efficient use of the available energy while maintaining a high level of comfort. Energy usage will greatly depend on the climate. In moderate climates the average power usage is 1kW, which means that some 4 days of sailing can provide a full month of energy usage… The energy-management-system will advice, predict and indicate power-use and -storage requirement.
A software safety system will monitor all onboard systems and environment conditions (including radar and weather changes) and detect any hazard that requires attention. A modular design of the various systems will allow for updates according the state-of-the-art technologies.

Generating energy: A safe and smart system of the batteries has been designed for Ecolution by Victronspecialist Johannes Boonstra. (Victron. The 220 V battery-pack is placed in two strings, 110 V left and 110 Volt right. It will be a very robust system and if something goes wrong a battery-pack can be shut down without influencing the system. This back-up philosophy of ‘fail-ops-fail safe’ is such that even when the central system fails there will still be an extra back-up. All winches for instance will have local batteries and in case of failure they are eventually hand-operational.

Batteries: Storage of energy will be in 120 maintenance free gel-lead-acid-batteries; 120 industrial 12OpzV 1500 cells (Enersys). These batteries replace the use of conventional led-ballast.
In the future new type of batteries like Lithium polymer could be used.


FAILS-OPS-FAIL-SAFE

The overall safety approach is double fail-safe allowing ‘soft’ degradation of essential functions. This failure tolerance and reliability approach is mimicked from the US space shuttle: a so-called Fail-Ops-Fail-Safe design philosophy which results for the Ecolution in a fully redundant port and starboard power, drive, navigation and control system.

Each of these, so-called strings, consists of one rudder, an autopilot, a propeller, an electromotor/generator, one gearbox-transmission, one diesel motor, inverters for 230VAC and a huge battery bank. All handlings including the sails have a manual backup. Redundancy of rigging is achieved by increased rudder authority (two large efficient blades) and allows sailing even with one mast operational (either front or rear).

The steel hull makes one feel safe. Everywhere in the world steel is well known and nowadays it is carefree for years and years with the modern conserving paint systems. The hull is Lloyds certified.
